Trees – December 2017

PumpHouse
Many people dress a particular type of tree in December (yes, a Christmas tree!), but did you know the first week of December is widely recognised as a time to dress trees of all kinds. In 1990, the charity Common Ground, which campaigns to connect people to their local environment, instigated Tree Dressing Day, which falls in the first weekend of December each year.
Since trees are important in so many ways, we thought we would choose TREES as the theme across the Duckworth Worcester Trust, including the Pump House, for December 2017.

Why do trees matter?

Rainforests are among the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, and are like Earth's lungs, providing huge amounts of oxygen. Trees at large in the countryside are vital at preventing flooding, reducing soil erosion, acting as natural windbreaks and providing home, shelter and food for wildlife. In the city, trees provide a vital connection to nature, as well as offering shade.

And everywhere, trees provide materials for human shelter, furniture, tools, paper ...
